Are you washing your face correctly?
A seemingly simple task can easily escalate into a multi-step project when you begin discovering you’ve been missing steps. Diligence is a key factor when washing your face. It’s not always about what you know or how much you know but more of a matter about how you use that information productively. So today, we will dive into some tips on how to properly wash your face. We provide techniques to confirm you’ve achieved a successful facial cleanse, keeping your skin healthy and glowing. And before we begin, remember to wash face before bed, in the morning and after sweating excessively!
First, wash your hands.
It may seem like an apparent step to some, but others may forget this step. This is an important first step into proper facial cleansing. Your hands carry an abundance of bacteria throughout the day. Forgetting to wash your hands prior to cleansing your face, leaves your pores vulnerable to the bacteria. Splashing water on your face and calling it a day is a technique you’ll want to reconsider because you’re not only adding additional bacteria to your face but you’re not actually cleansing your face either.
If you’re a makeup wearing enthusiast and it’s time to wash your face, we highly advise you to begin with transforming your face back into a blank canvas. In other words, remove your makeup before you get the soap involved. Makeup may enter and clog your pores and leave behind product residue that facial cleanser cannot tackle. If your idea of facial cleansing consists of makeup remover and voila, you’re done – we recommend you reconsider. You may choose to opt in using makeup remover wipes, or makeup remover on a cotton ball. As long as the technique is effective in removing makeup, use whichever method is suitable for you. After your makeup is removed, bacteria still lingers and you will continue to the next step.
Believe it or not, water temperatures play a big role in proper facial cleansing. The reason for this is simple, hot water can dehydrate the skin, leave your face red and even strip your face of essential oils. On the other hand, cold water will not tighten your pores and will not help in eliminating bacteria. Cool water, not cold, may relieve puffiness and redness and can be found refreshing. Luke warm water is highly recommended for facial cleansing. Warm water balances natural skin oils and allows for dirt and bacteria to be removed. Warm water assists facial cleanser in accomplishing the most effective cleanse versus hot or cold water.
Facial cleanser for skin type
It is important to have a designated facial cleanser for your skin type. Cleansers are not all created equally and some are specifically designed to benefit specific skin types. If you have sensitive skin, a cream, oil, powder or micellar cleanser may be gentle on your skin. Oily skin types should use a gel, foam, clay or powder facial cleanser as it cleans out pores and excess oils. Dry skin benefits most from cream, oil or miscellar facial cleansers that add a touch of moisture to your skin. Combination skin works well with gel, foam and clay facial cleansers. Discovering your skin type and targeted facial cleanser will provide the maximum benefits for your skin type. For example, if you have dry skin and you’re using a foam cleanser, your face will not receive the moisture that a cream cleanser provides.
Washing and drying your face
Now that you’ve washed your hands, removed your makeup if applicable, have warm water and your designated facial cleanser, it’s time to begin. First things first, do not rub or scrub, as you don’t want to irritate your face. Second, gently move your hands in a circular motion as you lather the cleanser on your face. You’ll want to continue this motion throughout your face, specifically your t-zone, jaw line and hairline. Gently lather for 30 seconds to a minute to avoid lathering too long. Rinse with warm water. If you also have a designated facial towel, forget about it because it may be abrasive to your skin and contain bacteria that will make your face dirty all over again. Instead, use a clean and sterile tissue or paper towel. Dab or pat your face dry gently and consider yourself done with this step.
Moisturize after cleansing
Moisturizing your face after cleansing is probably equally important as cleansing itself. Why? Moisturizer, serum and SPF provide ultra moisturizing benefits when your face is dry after washing. Avoid products consisting of alcohol as the ingredient will dry your skin. Green tea, pomegranate and chamomile are healthy ingredients for the skin. We highly recommend natural serum for your skin because serum penetrates deep into the skin, loaded with active moisturizing ingredients, nutrients, and vitamins. We recommend you moisturize your neck as well to avoid premature wrinkles or dryness of your neck skin.
Exfoliation and facial masks
Exfoliation is a great thing and so are facial masks every once is a while. But not every day. If you have dry or sensitive skin, we recommend exfoliating once or twice a week. Oily and combination skin types should avoid exfoliating more than three times a week. We advise against exfoliating your skin too much, as it may cause inflamed, irritated, peeling or prematurely aging skin. And for the sake of your healthy skin, do not wash your face after exfoliating or facial masks. Instead, wash your face prior to exfoliating or facial masks and afterwards, use moisturizers to revitalize your skin of moisture and vitamins.
